Grand Music of Tang is a suite
of 24 classical guitar pieces, each of
which was inspired by a specific poem from the Tang Dynasty of China
(618-907 AD). This work was commissioned by Japanese classical
guitarist Mr.
Kazuhito Yamashita
in 1999. For No. 3. Through Yangzi Gorges, the poem
in Chinese and its English translation are shown below.

早
發白帝城 (李白)
朝辭白帝彩雲間,
千里江陵一日還。
兩岸猿聲啼不盡,
輕舟己過萬重山。
復照青苔上。 |
Through Yangzi Gorges (Li
Bai, 701-762 AD, China)
From Baidi City high in color clouds I left at dawn,
Covering a hundred miles to Jiangling when the day is done.
While monkeys screams from both banks still linger on,
Through a thousand mountains my light boat has gone.
