This piece was world-premiered by the Hotshot Cello Choir
at the National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts (Weiwuying) on
September 1, 2019.
Program Notes
This cello quartet includes the following thee pieces:
Breezy Oceans (3'36"), At the Temple (5'14”), and
Tung Blossoms (2'43"). The music expresses the natural
and cultural sceneries of Taiwan. Breezy Oceans was
inspired by the coastal views of southern Taiwan including
sunset, breeze, and beach activities. At the Temple was
composed with the techniques of minimal music to express
the scenes at the temple with the monks praising the
scriptures repetitively and in unison during the ceremony.
Tung Blossoms was set to a simple ternary form. The
romantic melody outlines the landscape of the booming tung
flowers (Vernicia fordii) in spring. It is called the Snow
in May, with white flowers cover the entire hills and petals
flying in the air like snow flakes.
